The Netherlands, often called Holland, is a monarchy with population of more than 16.6 million people and an area of 41, 526 square kilometers.

The country has a stable and strong economy and its unemployment rate of 3.3% is considered the lowest rate of all the European Union countries. In addition, UNICEF ranked the country on a first place in child well-being. Some of the developed industries are food-processing, financial services, chemicals and electrical machinery. Important for the economy are also the international trade, banking and transport.

Tourism is well-developed in the country thanks to Amsterdam, which is the fifth busiest tourist destination in Europe.

The country joined the European Union on March 25, 1957. Its currency was the Dutch guilder until 1999, when it was replaced by the Euro.
