The Portuguese Republic covers 92,090 square kilometers with population of almost 11 million people.

It joined the European Union on January 1, 1986.

The world’s largest solar power plant and the first commercial wave power farm are located in Portugal. Traditional industries such as clothing, wood products and beverages have been gradually overtaken by business services and development of the high-tech sector. The fisheries sector is well-developed and it makes Portugal one of the countries with the highest fish consumption per capita.

Tourism is another increasing industry, but some of its Eastern European countries are quite competitive as they offer similar tourist attractions at lower prices.

The country’s former currency was the escudo until 1999, when the euro was introduced. Then, in 2002, the escudo was removed from circulation as the euro cash was put into use.
