Greece occupies an area of 131,990 square kilometers with population of over 11 million people, and is a parliamentary republic.

Ancient Greece is said to be the birthplace of Western civilization, including democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, political science, mathematics, drama, Western literature, and more.

It joined the European Union on January 1, 1981.

Shipping industry is leading for the economy of Greece. In fact, the Greek-owned navy is considered to be the largest in the world. Tourism, on the other hand, is a major source of foreign exchange earnings. In 2005, China voted Greece as their number one tourist destination, and in 2006 both China and Austria voted Greece as their favourite spot.

Since 1832, the country’s currency was drachma, and in 2001 the euro became the official legal tender.
