Finland is a semi-presidential republic governing over a 5-million population on an area of 338,424 square kilometers.

It became member of the European Union on January 1, 1995.

The country is highly industrialized–the largest industries are machinery, vehicles, forest, chemicals, and electronics–the headquarters of Nokia are located in Finland. Shipping is also an important industry for the Finnish economy as the world’s biggest cruise ships are built there.

In 2009, the country was ranked on a first place in the Legatum Prosperity rating based on economical performance and quality of life.

The Finnish markka was the country’s currency from 1860 until 2002 when the euro was officially introduced in cash and replaced completely the markka.
