The Kingdom of Belgium covers an area of 30,528 square kilometers with population of 10,296,300. The headquarters of the European Union are located in the country as it was a founding member of the EU. Belgium is a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.
Belgium has one of the strongest economies in Europe with main imports of food, petroleum, clothing, machineries, rough diamonds, and more, and main exports of automobiles, food, iron, steel, finished diamonds, plastics, and others.
It became member of the EU on March 25, 1957, but it kept its currency—the Belgian franc—until 2002, when it switched to the euro.
