The Republic of Bulgaria occupies 110,993 square kilometers, and its population is about 7.5 million.

It joined the European Union on January 1, 2007.

Bulgarian economy has been rapidly growing during recent years, and its economy has been classified as an upper-middle-income. It still remains, however, the lowest-income country of the EU.

The main production comes from raw materials such as iron, copper, gold, bismuth, coal, electronics, construction materials and others. In fact, its energy sector is well-developed and is of significant importance for the Balkans. Bulgaria is also one of the top world producers of chili peppers, sunflower seed, raspberries, anise, and more.

Bulgaria still uses its own currency—the lev (BGN). The country was supposed to adopt the euro in 2012, but inflation problems put on hold the currency change. According to specialists, the country should be able to accept the euro by 2015, but The Economist magazine suggested Bulgaria is ready for the euro now.
